Membership Criteria Membership of the CVCA is entirely at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
General All applicants must be actively involved in venture capital and / or private equity, be of good standing in the risk capital community, and have been proposed by two full members who have themselves been members for a minimum of one year. The CVCA regards companies that are stand-alone legal entities as separate companies and must apply as such.
a) Full Members
Every applicant must be involved in, as a principal business, the provision of equity and debt to unquoted companies and have risk capital funds under management in Canada. Full members must fall into one of five categories:
- Venture Capital Funds – primary business is venture capital investing, such as private firms and labour-sponsored funds.
- Financial institutions, including banks, insurance companies, pension funds and endowments active in private risk capital
- Corporate Investors – suppliers of risk capital and /or direct investors such as corporations making investments in Canadian venture capital and private equity firms or direct investments in Canada.
- Private Equity Investors – suppliers of capital with focus on larger established companies.
- Angel Investor – firm or individual who invests in early stage businesses.
If a firm in any of these categories meets the current requirements for full member status under the CVCA By-Laws regarding funds available for investment, it would be granted full member status.
b) Advisory Members
All applicants must be actively involved in the venture capital and private equity industry and fall into one of four categories:
- Corporate Advisors – corporations providing services to the venture capital and private equity industry
- Corporate Affiliates – corporations with a strategic interest in growth sectors but may not be investors or provide services to the industry.
- Government / Universities – departments within Universities or the Canadian or International governments with an interest in the industry.
- Personal Advisors – sole practitioner providing services to the venture capital and private equity industry. This membership is non-transferable.
c) International Members
All applicants must have an active interest in Canada but do not have to reside in Canada.
d) Student Members
All applicants must be a full-time student with an accredited post-secondary school.

Above fees are in Canadian dollars. A 5% GST (Goods & Services Tax) is applicable to ALL member fees due (including International) to Canadian Venture Capital Association with the exception of those firms who provide us with a GST exempt number. CVCA’s GST Registration Number is R119699577.
Please submit your completed application without payment to CVCA for approval. Once your membership application is approved, an invoice will be sent to you. Membership fees are payable by cheque, VISA, MasterCard or AMEX.
Privacy Practice for Membership Forms:
The CVCA collects personal information from you when you join or renew the CVCA as a member. By registering for membership you consent to your personal information being used and disclosed by the CVCA in the following situations: to administer the CVCA and any events held by or in relation to the CVCA:

to contact you to provide you with information about CVCA and industry events and sponsorship opportunities for CVCA events;

to publish an attendee list for events with your contact information to distribute to all attendees of the event. The attendee list may also be used by sponsors to contact attendees about the sponsor’s organizations or events;

to publish contact business information including email addresses for members on the CVCA website;

to provide information to third parties such as researchers for data collection and research reports;

to aid service providers we use to support our business (e.g. technical support or third parties administering credit card payment systems), in which case we will require third parties to protect the privacy of the information they have access to; and

where permitted or required by applicable laws, court orders or government regulations.
You have the option to refuse the collection of personal information and, subject to certain legal or contractual restrictions and reasonable notice, to withdraw your consent to the continued use and disclosure by the CVCA of information previously collected. You may withdraw your consent by writing to the Privacy Officer at the address provided below. Please note that such refusal or withdrawal may render the CVCA unable to provide you with membership or participation in certain events or with certain CVCA services.
