CVCA's Drivers of Performance Study
Phase 1
At the CVCA Annual Conference in Vancouver on June 2nd, 2006, Dr. Gilles Duruflé presented the results of a major study of the “Drivers of Performance in the Canadian Venture Capital Industry”. This study was commissioned by the CVCA and it has been funded by the CVCA and Summit Capital 2000. The study has two parts. The first part is the most detailed comparison of Canadian VC returns to those in the US that has ever been conducted. The second part is a detailed comparison of operating practices in the Canadian and US VC industries. The CVCA believes that this is the most detailed analysis that has ever been done of the Canadian VC industry. Phase 2
As a follow-up to the study, a committee of the CVCA board, together with other interested venture industry participants, undertook the task to review these findings and determine how to improve the industry in Canada. This work was divided into two groups. Group 1 examined issues related to building strong portfolio companies with comparisons between Canada, Israel and the US and the result of this work may be found in the report below called 'Building Strong Portfolio Companies & Exiting Effectively'. The second group is researching how to build stronger Canadian GPs and this work is in progress.
