Toronto, ON – March 7, 2024 – The Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) is pleased to announce the winners of the second Canadian Women in Private Capital Awards. These awards, introduced in 2023, honour the achievements of women who have contributed to the Canadian private capital industry's success and growth.

This year's winners were at a breakfast event this morning (March 7, 2024) in celebration of International Women’s Day. The event, sponsored by CIBC Innovation Banking, demonstrated the industry's commitment to acknowledging and fostering leadership and diversity.

CVCA’s Woman of Achievement Award

The Woman of Achievement Award recognizes outstanding Canadian general partners (GPs) and their dedication to elevating the performance and leadership of women in the Canadian private capital industry. The winners of the Woman of Achievement Award have shown dedication to raising the bar for performance by women in the industry, have had a significant impact on innovation and value creation and have contributed meaningfully to improving gender diversity in the industry and beyond.

  • Tracey McVicar, Partner, CAI Capital Partners was the 2024 winner of the Woman of Achievement Award for private equity. McVicar, a veteran in investment banking before joining CAI in 2003, has been instrumental in steering the firm towards substantial growth and demonstrating unwavering commitment to enhancing diversity within the industry. Her leadership roles across various boards, philanthropic efforts, and mentorship initiatives exemplify her significant impact on the community and the industry at large.
  • Sophie Forest, Partner at Brightspark Ventures, has received the 2024 Woman of Achievement Award for venture capital. Forest's visionary approach and dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion have led Brightspark Ventures to become a model for equality within the VC landscape. Her efforts have significantly influenced the broader ecosystem, encouraging more equitable participation and leadership opportunities for women in venture capital.

CVCA’s Rising Woman Star Award

The Rising Woman Star Award recognizes individuals who have made significant business contributions and achieved notable accomplishments in Canadian private capital. The winners of the Rising Woman Start Award have demonstrated exceptional leadership, contributed to improving gender diversity, and have exhibited a clear and strong ambition for advancement into leadership roles.

  • Cathy Xue, Principal, Instar Asset Management has been awarded the 2024 PE Rising Woman Star Award. Since joining Instar in 2014 and her promotion to Principal in 2023, Xue has played a pivotal role in leading and executing major investment opportunities. Her leadership in portfolio management and advocacy for women in private equity highlight her dedication to advancing the sector and fostering a more inclusive environment.
  • Sophie Gupta, Principal & Head of Responsible Investing, Yaletown Partners Inc. has received the 2024 VC Rising Woman Star Award for her extraordinary contributions to responsible investing and her efforts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the industry. Gupta's leadership and innovative initiatives, including the co-founding of the Equality Fund, have positioned her as a significant force in promoting gender equality and sustainable investing practices.
